AT&T takes a risk with fast growing Southern California ISP

PAJO partners with major Telco for rapid growth

LONG BEACH, Calif. - October 13, 1999 - On Thursday September 23 at 12:04 am The Pajo Group, a Southern California business Internet access provider, cut over their private AT&T OC48 backbone access platform.

"The decision to provide dedicated OC48 access is not made lightly and in fact can be rare for regional ISPs," stated Rick Friedowitz of AT&T local services. "It requires a large capital equipment allocation and placement of the client as a node on our fiber Sonet Ring. The Pajo Group is my fastest growing ISP customer in Southern California. They grew from one DS-3 to
twelve DS-3s in 13 months time. They have built an impressive management team and have a stellar Cisco based Network Operations Center. PAJO is on the fast track for explosive growth and AT&T wants to be a part of it."

Whether they like it or not, ISP's offering business T-1 access heavily depend on their partnerships with the Telcos. Internet access via a T-1 line inherently requires a T-1 line from a Telco carrier. A customer is delivered to the ISP on the Telco T-1 line and again out to the Internet through larger DS-3 (equal to 28 T-1 lines) or OC48 (equal to 48 DS-3 lines) Telco lines.

Since regional ISP's go in and out of business quickly, it can be a challenge for new players to be taken seriously by giants like AT&T who either grant or deny access into OC48 facilities.

The "OC" in OC48 stands for "Optical Carrier" and the 48 denote the number of DS3's (sometimes called T3's) that can be carried. This is a fiber optics switch that delivers and manages data and voice services via light rather than electrical current. Practically speaking, an OC48 switch can connect 1344 Private, non-shared full T-1 customers or about 1,000,000 shared dial up users. OC48 is considered extremely high capacity; most national Internet Service Providers backbones do not consist of 100% OC48
connectivity.

The PAJO Group network topology was designed by NetConstruct, Inc., a Studio City-based consulting firm which designs and builds highly advanced commercial Internet networks. Past projects by NetConstruct's team include EarthLink Network, FirstWorld Communications Internet services platform, Bank of America's Global Data Network, Chevron's nationwide credit card Network Operation Center, Bechtel's global messaging systems, DHLNET, the world's largest private IP network, and others.

Alex Paoli, NetConstruct's VP of Technology and Network Architect for the Pajo project stated: "AT&T's decision did not surprise me. It was a pleasure designing PAJO's network, as their emphasis is squarely on delivering the highest quality service possible. I designed the network to be high-speed and scalable, with redundant connections directly to the backbone, which has made them a Tier-2 provider. In addition to the OC48, AT&T installed 11 additional pairs of dark fiber directly into PAJO's NOC, which gives them a potential Internet bandwidth of very close to 25 Gigabytes. They're selling top-of-the-line T-1 service at an amazing price, and we're expecting their aggressive business model to make them a major player in the dedicated high-speed Internet market."

When John Carter, Chief Executive Officer of the Pajo Group was asked how he accounted for the AT&T decision, he said: "This was a natural step for us. Our vendors take us seriously because we take or customers seriously. The demand for capacity has been driven by our increase in customer base, which is simply due to our attitude towards customer service. Ultimately, as we continue to put our customers first, everything else falls into place."

The Pajo Group specializes in full point-to-point T-1 Internet access, to their OC48 backbone with no Telco, install or equipment fees in Southern California. It also provides dedicated web server co-location in its Long Beach facility. The company employs 17 at the Long Beach office. Revenues have tripled since year end 1998.
